Intaglio and Woodcut Courses

Introduction to Etching

2 day course - 10.30am – 5.30pm

Etching as a process was developed as a quicker, looser, less labour intensive alternative to engraving.  An image could be drawn through a wax ground, and the corrosive action of acid used to etch the lines into the metal plates.

Our Introduction to Etching course allows participants to work on their own zinc plates, experiment first with hard ground and soft ground, then adding tone using aquatint techniques.

Participants will print examples of each of these processes and leave with these prints and their plates. You can view some examples from previous workshops here.

Photopolymer for Intaglio

1 day course - 10.30am – 5.30pm

This course will explore light sensitive photopolymer plates, a new fine art printmaking technology.

Artists are now using photopolymer plates to produce a wide range of printed imagery. They handle both text and image very well, and are extremely user friendly.  A drawing or photograph on transparent film, can be placed on the photopolymer plate and exposed to ultraviolet light.

Participants will have the chance to provide their own images (photographic or hand drawn) which they will be shown how to prepare for exposure, they will produce test plates and final plates and will then be shown how to ink up and print these plates.  They will leave with both these prints and the plates created during the course. You can view some examples from previous workshops here.

Creating Textures and Tones in Etching

*0 *2 *3 *4

1 day course – 10.30am – 5.30pm

This one day course is ideal for those who have a foundation in etching but would like to expand their knowledge and technique from line based work to creating textures and tone. The day will give a taster into exploring textures using sugar lift and spit bite.

Both sugar lift and spit bite are used by drawing directly onto the plate with a brush and can give you a freedom in your mark making.

Sugar lift is a syrup-like sugar solution painted onto the plate and then etched as a tone using aquatint or as a an open-bite line. Picasso used this technique in many of his etchings.

Spit bite is used by painting acid directly onto the plate to give wash like effects.

Participants will leave the course with the knowledge of how to apply and aquatint, how to mix, prepare and use sugar lift, and how to apply spit bite. Participants must have some previous experience of etching.
