Intaglio and Woodcut Courses

Introduction to Etching

2 day course – 10.30am – 5.30pm

Etching as a process was developed as a quicker, looser, less labour intensive alternative to engraving.  An image could be drawn through a wax ground, and the corrosive action of acid used to etch the lines into the metal plates.

Our Introduction to Etching course allows participants to work on their own zinc plates, experiment first with hard ground and soft ground, then adding tone using aquatint techniques.

Participants will print examples of each of these processes and leave with these prints and their plates. You can view some examples from previous workshops here.

Photopolymer for Intaglio

*1 *2 *33*3

1 day course – 10.30am – 5.30pm

This course will explore light-sensitive photopolymer plates, a new fine art printmaking technology.

Artists are now using photopolymer plates to produce a wide range of printed imagery. They handle both text and image very well, and are extremely user-friendly.  A drawing or photograph on transparent film, can be placed on the photopolymer plate and exposed to ultraviolet light.

Participants will have the chance to provide their own images (photographic or hand drawn) which they will be shown how to prepare for exposure, they will produce test plates and final plates and will then be shown how to ink up and print these plates.  They will leave with both these prints and the plates created during the course. You can view some examples from previous workshops here.

2 day course – 10.30am – 5.30pm

Our intermediate course is perfect for etchers who wish to build on their techniques. This course allows participants to enhance their current skills whilst gaining an in-depth understanding of other etching techniques and processes.

With the guidance of the course tutor, participants will individually develop their own artwork. There will also be the opportunity to experiment with a range of exciting techniques such as multiplate etching, spit-bite and sugar lift . The course will be focused on improving competency and experimenting with new techniques.

Ideal for anyone who wish to improve their skills and develop their own imagery. Participants must have previous experience of etching. Our intermediate course is ideal for all participants who have attended our Introduction to Etching class.

On day one we will look at a range of examples of different etching techniques and individually assess images and decide how to best start developing an etching. Demonstrations of multiplate etching, spit bite and sugar lift will be given throughout the day.

On day two we will continue to develop imagery using the techniques learnt on day one, experimenting with colour printing and chine collé.

Participants may also bring in already etched zinc plates that they wish to develop further.

Multiplate Photopolymer Course

P1060715

2 day course: 10.30am – 5.30pm

On this two days course you will learn to explore the potential of photopolymer to make beautiful multiple plate intaglio images. You will learn to break down your image into layers using hand drawn and photographic techniques and explore mark using dry and liquid drawing materials. We will revise the plate exposure and plate developing. You will have the opportunity to learn registration techniques to help you print multiple plate and multiple colour images that will result in richly layered images. You will learn about using colour, mixing inks and printing a small edition on different paper types.

This is a great course for those of you who have tried photopolymer for intaglio or have some previous etching experience and wish to learn a new intaglio method and improve your skill step-by-step.

We strongly recommend that participants have an excellent understanding of photopolymer before attending this course, or have already completed our introduction to Photopolymer for Intaglio one day course.

1 day course – 10.30am – 5.30pm

This one day course will be offering you the chance to learn the method of Woodcut Printing from Jonathan Ashworth, a professional artist providing enthusiastic tuition and advice at a high technical Level. Using high quality cutting tools, beautiful rollers and sumptuous oil based inks, this is a class for those that enjoy the physicality of materials.

This course will introduce students to materials, cutting techniques, the production of a multi-layered image, and the use of different inks.

Jonathan Ashworth is an artist who specializes in the production of traditional woodcuts and wood engravings. These are two closely related methods of printmaking that produce beautiful textured surfaces and feelings of otherworldliness through the use of extremely fine and intricate marks.

Jonathan studied at the Royal College of Art, from where he graduated with first class honours in 2006, having previously completed a Fine Art undergraduate degree in Edinburgh. After exhibiting widely across the UK he won Young Artist Of The Year 2012 at the Biscuit Factory (Newcastle).

Oil Monotype

P1080259edit oiledit

1 day course – 10.30am – 5.30pm

Monotyping is a type of printmaking made by drawing or painting on a   non-absorbent surface. The most painterly of printmaking techniques, monotype was used by artists like Degas, and it is possible to produce a varied edition with the technique. The image is then transferred onto a sheet of paper by pressing the two together. The course explores the possibilities of oil-based monotypes printed with an etching press. The course will cover basic monotype techniques, mark-marking and multi-layered prints.

Mezzotint

P1080417 P1080402P1080397editcrop

1 day course – 10.30am – 5.30pm

Mezzotint is an dry-point technique where a metal plate is indented so that it prints solid black. Mid-tones and highlights are then scraped and burnished back into the plate to create the image. The technique was used by great painter- printmakers like John Martin and J.M.W.Turner. In the 20th century, more artists like Maurits Escher and Yozo Hamaguchi became fascinated with the technique.

In this one day course we will be experimenting with a contemporary application of the mezzotint, using an aquatint ground.
*This course is suited for participants who have a good foundation in basic etching techniques, particularly aquatint.

Working on your own zinc plate, participants can experiment with mezzotint techniques using an aquatint ground.

Course contents:

Traditional mezzotint ground and mezzotint ground with aquatint

• Drawing into a mezzotint ground

• Preparing and inking up plates for intaglio printing
