Intaglio and Woodcut Courses

Introduction to Etching

2 day course - 10.30am – 5.30pm

Etching as a process was developed as a quicker, looser, less labour intensive alternative to engraving.  An image could be drawn through a wax ground, and the corrosive action of acid used to etch the lines into the metal plates.

Our Introduction to Etching course allows participants to work on their own zinc plates, experiment first with hard ground and soft ground, then adding tone using aquatint techniques.

Participants will print examples of each of these processes and leave with these prints and their plates. You can view some examples from previous workshops here.

1 day course - 10.30am – 5.30pm

This course will explore light sensitive photopolymer plates, a new fine art printmaking technology.

Artists are now using photopolymer plates to produce a wide range of printed imagery. They handle both text and image very well, and are extremely user friendly.  A drawing or photograph on transparent film, can be placed on the photopolymer plate and exposed to ultraviolet light.

Participants will have the chance to provide their own images (photographic or hand drawn) which they will be shown how to prepare for exposure, they will produce test plates and final plates and will then be shown how to ink up and print these plates.  They will leave with both these prints and the plates created during the course. You can view some examples from previous workshops here.

Rembrandt Drypoint Etching Workshop

Friday 28th November 2014 – 10:30 to 17:30
Price: £100.00 (£80.00 concessions*) includes exhibition ticket.

To coincide with the upcoming Rembrandt:The Late Works exhibition at the National Gallery, londonprintstudio will be running a special workshop on Friday 28th November.
This workshop explores the techniques of drypoint and selective inking, which distinguished Rembrandt’s prints from those by his contemporaries.
Drypoint employs a sharp needle to scratch lightly into the plate. The printed line appears slightly ragged or fuzzy, creating a velvety effect. By selectively wiping the plate, Rembrandt left subtle tones of ink residue that enabled him to manipulate the mood and produce individual variations of each print.
At this day-long workshop, which takes place at londonprintstudio, you will experiment with drypoint to create your own print. The day ends with an informal talk about Rembrandt with National Gallery curator Lelia Packer.

There are 8 spaces available on our Rembrandt Drypoint Workshop, which are booked on a first-come first-served basis. If you have any queries or would like to book a place on this course please contact the studio on 020 8969 3247 or by emailcourses@londonprintstudio.org.uk.
