Forthcoming Exhibition: Living Proof
Opening Party: Thursday 20th February 2014 – 6.30pm – 8.30pm
Exhibition runs from Friday 14th February until Saturday 29th March 2014
A fascination with creatures and their portrayal in art is a recurring feature amongst many of the artists exhibiting in our new exhibition Living Proof. We are delighted to be able to host Living Proofhere at londonprintstudio, an exhibition of prints, paintings and sculptural work co-curated by artist Fiona Watson and Glasgow Print Studio Director John Mackechnie.
The title of this group show from Glasgow Print Studio is a direct reference to Charles Darwin’s voyage on the HMS Beagle in search of living specimens to support his theory of evolution. And there may also be a sense of evolution through the works on display, with a pan-generational host of Glasgow artists – including John Byrne, Elizabeth Blackadder and Alasdair Gray – being asked to contribute. The print works range from the humorous to the esoteric, with a broad range of styles and tones in between.
John Phillips, Director of londonprintstudio said ‘Glasgow has a fine tradition of printmaking, and Glasgow Print Studio is used by many leading Scottish artists. Evolution and the use of animals in art presents a fascinating subject.’ Fiona Watson, one of the exhibiting artists maintains that ‘The use of animals in art allows us to reflect on who we are and who “they” are, she has said. As our culture becomes more urbanised and virtual, there is a need to explore the natural realm. After all, the animal represents our ancestral partner.’
Tuesday – Saturday, 10.30am – 5.30pm
