Photopolymer for Vandercook Letterpress
1 Day Course – 10.30am – 5.30pm
Letterpress is a traditional printing technique which has been in use for hundreds of years. Originally developed to print text from metal type, letterpress has recently been adopted by artists, fine printers, and graphic designers as an elegant way to combine text and imagery on the page. Ideal for printing from wood cuts, linoleum cuts and other relief surfaces, these presses offer artists a wealth of possibilities. The advent of polymer printing plates have made it possible to print imagery and text from digitally designed files.
In this one-day course, students will be introduced to the Vandercook flatbed cylinder press. We will cover the basic operation of the press and the vocabulary of letterpress printing. We will discuss the variety of relief printing techniques that are possible on letterpress machines. By the end of the day, students will expose and print from a polymer plate made from a digital file. You can view some examples from previous workshops here.
