This two day course is aimed at artists who have been working with etching as a development of their artistic practice. Perfect for those who have gained skills in the etching process and wish to extend their plate-making, colour proofing and editioning skills to a professional finished product.
Artists are to bring in their current plates either copper or zinc to discuss colour proofing to a final bon á tirer or BAT meaning “good to pull”. Which is the first perfect impression of the work that the artist is satisfied with before handing over to the editioner, and the one that will be used to judge all other impressions in the edition.
Plates will be finished to an editioning standard, you will learn various methods in colourprinting, plate-making methods and the practice of efficient editioning methods.
You will produce a small edition depending on size of plate and the number of colours, which can be further editioned on other days.
Stella Whalley is a Fine artist and University Lecturer with a professional printmaking background as an Intaglio plate-maker, proofer and printer for Hope Sufferance Studios and technical assistant to Anthony Benjamin at Clarendon Graphics.
Day one will involve showing some etchings and plate-making techniques, looking at the plates brought in to see what needs to be done to finish them, ready for proofing.
Mixing up colour etching inks and preparing paper for final editioning, finish plate making and start colour proofing. Select final BAT and write up instructions and colour proofing notes for the next days editioning.
Day two will involve preparation of editioning area, mixing up inks for the size of edition, start editioning with one-to-one tutorials throughout the afternoon.
