Lorna Scobie is a London based illustrator and creator of cheeky characters and sinister stories. She was one of the recipient of our 2012 Graduate Award prize. Lorna says of her time spent in the studio ‘ I found the New Graduate award at londonprintstudio extremely rewarding as it allowed me to dedicate time to a project I had wanted to develop for a long time. After leaving the print rooms at university a few months earlier, I was craving printmaking! At londonprintstudio I not only was given opportunity to develop skills I already had (in monoprint and screenprint) but also the chance to learn lithography, a process entirely new to me. One of the best things about the New Graduate Award was that I had time to experiment. This lead to me making mistakes and discovering new ways of working, without the concern of having to produce work to a tight deadline. For one of my screenprints, a dinosaur with a very long neck, the background layer didn’t turn out as I had hoped so I printed a number without this layer included. I was then able to work into these with monoprint, and create an entirely different aesthetic from the one I had initially planned. I enjoyed combining different printmaking processes and exploring colour and texture for a series of dinosaur and animal prints, which I plan to expand more and more’.
